This route starts at the UNESCO listed Wurzburg’s Residenz palace, which boasts of opulent interiors and the largest ceiling painting in the world. As you drive along the road, some of the most impressive sites that you will also experience are the fortified walls at the medieval cities of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Dinkelsbühl, Nördlingen and a 15½-mile crater created by a huge meteorite over 10 million years ago. Also, a tour of the wine producing villages along River Main is highly recommended, as is a visit to the Prince-Bishops’ summer palace at Veitshöchheim, 4 miles from Würzburg. This palace served as a hunting lodge for Prince Bishop and is also the country’s most famous rococo garden, decorated with more than 200 statues.
