The European commission is offering up to 30,000 tickets to 18 year olds this summer which will give you a whole month of free Interrail travel right accross Europe, yes you heard me correctly, absolutely free!
Why I hear you ask, what is the catch?
Well, honestly, there isn’t one! There are a couple of reasons attributed to this though. Firstly, the European Commission has a vision, a vision to promote inclusion and solidarity amongst young people accross Europe while they enjoy the beauty and culture of different countries! – (Their words). Hmmm, well if you think that all sounds a bit idealistic, putting that aside I would perhaps suggest it may well on a more practicle note have something more to do with the flagging interest in train travel. With prices generally on the increase for tains and with the continuing onslaught of the price war on budget airlines it has never been cheaper and easier to take a flight to your ideal destination, especially within Europe.
This European travel pass was actually first launched believe it or not in 1972! Way back then a young person could travel to 21 different countries in one month for just under £28 a bargain even then I think you will agree! It was very popular and thus begain the rucksack culture, of cheap and easy travel for young people. Now days the same pass costs a staggering £415, for that same month of travel, hence why the cheap flight has become so appealing to the savvy young travellers of today.
So this offering is a good deal, I mean you can’t get better than free right? So if you are turning 18 this year and have some serious plans to spread your wings and find out what’s out there, then this may well be the offer for you.

So, how to get your hands on this free pass?
Well, you need to do a little bit of homework and keep your eyes peeled. Head on over to the European Youth Portal and watch the news feed – Applications open in May although the exact dates are still to be announced, so don’t forget to check back regularly.
And of course one last important thing to remember; As we are leaving the EU in 2019 it is very likely that this is the last time you will have the opportunity to make the most of this free perk, so go for it now!
